Our Space

Ourspace

Our Space is a theatre group for people who feel socially excluded. Our aim is to create an exciting and engaging space that encourages self-expression amongst people who have low confidence or self esteem and may find long term or consistent commitment difficult. We target people who have experienced homelessness, mental health issues or addiction.

Our Space are currently working collaboratively on The Edge, an original production programmed for July 2013. Supported by the Theatre Royal, members are also developing skills in production design which will be showcased in this production.

What Our Space offers

The group is experimental and creative, and deliberately not geared towards attainment or accreditation. Rather, participants gain skills whilst rediscovering their own identities and creative talents. We encourage participants to become genuinely engaged with theatre, attending performances and discussing styles and technique, but workshops focus on process over product. Participants have control over how much of their work they share and the end result may be anything from recruiting new members and 'workshop' performances, to film, photos, new media and live performance.

In summary, Our Space aims to enable participants to:

•    Acquire transferable skills such as communication and team working

•    Use the creative space to help rediscover a sense of possibility and optimism

•    Raise their self-esteem and confidence to engage with mainstream arts provision and other services in Plymouth

•    Find a voice to express themselves and break down stereotypes

Our Space took part in the sell out festival Feast in the Drum Theatre in April 2011. Feast brought together a number of groups who take part in our Creative Learning programme, showcasing their distinct voices and identity.  Click here to view the trailer
