Ahead of Remembrance Sunday, Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) has signed the Armed Forces Covenant which pledges to support all those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces and their families.
On Friday 8 November, TRP Chief Executive and Executive Producer, James Mackenzie-Blackman, was joined at the theatre by senior members of the Armed Services from the region to mark the occasion.
The Covenant is a channel for voluntary and charitable bodies and private organisations to officially recognise the sacrifices that individuals make as a result of their duty. This extends to the families of serving members who play a vital role in supporting the operational effectiveness of the UK’s Armed Forces.
TRP Chief Executive and Executive Producer, James Mackenzie-Blackman, said: “Signing the covenant is a pivotal moment for the theatre and lays out our commitment to supporting the region’s Armed Services community including our colleagues who have loved ones serving, of which there are many.
“By signing and upholding the covenant, we acknowledge those individuals and recognise the value of their contribution to our business and our society.”
The Covenant signing runs alongside TRP’s Our Space programme which is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary and centres around four key strands of work including the Armed Forces. The scheme provides individuals experiencing multiple disadvantages with free, regular and meaningful activity that contributes to recovery and rehabilitation for individuals including veterans. The Armed Forces element is funded by the Veterans’ Foundation and provides creative opportunities and weekly workshops for service personnel, veterans and long-term wounded, injured and sick, using drama as a tool to build confidence, whilst learning theatre skills in a fun and supportive environment.
