Ongoing Projects
School Visits
Bringing your school group to the theatre? We’re here to make it easy and enjoyable!
For school bookings of 10 or more pupils, we offer a complimentary teacher’s ticket for every 10 students—because we know how important it is to have the right support in place.
NT Connections
Each year, The National Theatre commissions ten new plays for young people to perform, bringing together some of the UK’s most exciting writers with the theatre-makers of tomorrow.
Playhouse
Playhouse is a festival of new plays performed by KS2 classes in the Drum! Teachers are supported by professional directors, technicians and production staff to rehearse a play before it is performed in a professional venue, creating a truly memorable experience for all involved.
As part of this project, we’re able to provide a tailor-made programme of additional support including staff training and workshops, in addition to performance opportunities for Key Stage 2.
Company 15
Company15 is a week-long work experience programme for young people aged 14 – 17 (year 10 – 12). Designed to inspire a career within the arts, Company15 students will gain an insight into the workings of the largest and most well-attended regional producing theatre in the UK.
Teachers Club
We are throwing open our doors to welcome all educators for a night with TRP.
We’ll join up with other arts organisations to give you the opportunity to meet fellow teachers, have an informal chat with us and find out more about ways you can engage in our programmes.
Plus, the first 50 sign-ups get a free ticket for the opening night of Operation Mincemeat.
This is free to attend and will take place on Tue 30 Jun, 5pm – 7pm, we just ask that you are willing to engage in an honest conversation with us as we start to build relationships and our programmes with you all.
We welcome all educators from Primary, Secondary, SEN, FE and HE to relax and find out how best we can support you. Spaces are limited so please register your interest via the button below.
If you have any questions in advance or are unable to make it but would still like to engage and start conversations with us, please drop us an email.
TR2 School Tours
Our interactive tours open the doors to the many careers behind the curtain, showing students that theatre is about far more than performing.
Designed for all learners, not just aspiring actors, our workshops support the Gatsby Benchmarks by linking learning to real workplaces, broadening awareness of career pathways, and providing meaningful encounters with professionals and their workspaces.
Previous Opportunities
Matthew Bourne's New Adventures The Red Shoes
Two New Adventures Dance Artists toured to schools in and around Plymouth to deliver workshops connected to their production of Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes. The opportunities were designed to introduce young people and their teachers to the unique dance style of New Adventures and the way they create their work through insight into the creative and choreographic process behind The Red Shoes.
Through taking part, students were provided the opportunity to:
– Practically explore the ideas and movement language of The Red Shoes.
– Go on an adventure of discovery and expression through New Adventures unique story telling language and playful creative method.
– Learn more about the work of New Adventures and career pathways in theatre.
We received fantastic feedback from this programme and were thrilled to welcome so many new schools and engage students new to New Adventures’ work.
Thank you to all teachers for facilitating this in your schools!
Matilda The Musical
In November, we welcomed the RSC to TR2 with their CPD offerings for teachers who were taking part in their engagement programme alongside Matilda The Musical.
Over the course of three days we had a two day masterclass exploring approaches to rehearsing and staging the school’s version of Matilda with students. Across the two CPD days, teachers explored key scenes, common challenges, and approaches to musical and movement direction.
We then finished the week with a one day masterclass focusing on RSC rehearsal room pedagogy and how these activities can be used to help develop young people’s creative writing outcomes.
As part of this engagement, schools received a visit from the cast of Matilda to help with directing the show or reading out the creative writing. The pupils engaging in the programme also attended an open dress rehearsal of the show back in January.
