On Tuesday 8 September 2026, Theatre Royal Plymouth played host to Get Technical! Behind the Curtain of Moulin Rouge! The Musical following on from other popular events in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and across the globe.

Get Technical! offers anyone aspiring to a career in theatre a glimpse behind the curtain of the multi award-winning Moulin Rouge! The Musical with the chance to hear from members of the production’s backstage and technical teams, watch live on-stage demonstrations and learn more about what goes into the making of a musical Spectacular!

From wigs to wardrobe and sound to stage management, the event aims to motivate and inspire young people to consider a career in backstage positions in the performing arts industry. 550 pupils from across Plymouth were shown how the different technical departments work together to create the production and were given a sneak peek of some of the stage secrets and magic behind the show.

Backstage and technical team members also shared stories from their own career journeys and give tips for getting into the industry.

Backstage is where all the magic happens. Producers are constantly on the lookout for great crew and backstage company members,” explains producer Carmen Pavlovic.

We’re after stage managers; lighting technicians; hair, wig and makeup artists; wardrobe assistants; set automation and mechanists to name a few. We’re thrilled to reach even more people with Get Technical as part of our World Tour. By showcasing Get Technical in Plymouth, we hope young people will be inspired to consider the many potential career pathways into working in live theatre.”

Heather Johns, Project Manager, Young People and Partnerships at TRP, added: “We welcomed 550 school pupils to Get Technical. They were bedazzled by the opening number of the show before the careers demonstration began. The attendees heard from lighting, sound, WHAM, stage management, costume and automation with demonstrations of their job as well as insights into how they got into their roles. The event ended with a Q&A with heads of department – all hosted by a member of the cast. The ‘unsung’ heroes of the show engaged with the young people and gave a beautiful demonstration of careers in theatre – with some showstopping entrances by the team!

Feedback from participants:

“I loved it, it’s made me want to go and see a show”

“It’s so amazing how it all works together, so many people we don’t see”
