Complicité has announced the cohort of artists and nominating partners who make up the 2025 Mudlarks International Residency.
Mudlarks is Complicité’s ideas development programme, dedicated to providing space and resources for exceptional early-mid career artists to interrogate their ideas. It encourages creativity without the constraints of rigid methodologies and target-driven pressures. A core part of this programme, the Mudlarks International Residency is a week-long residency for both UK and International artists who are supported by Complicité and its nominating partners to spend the time journeying to the hinterland of an idea.
The artists are: AK Golding (supported by In Good Company), Anka Herbut (supported by Polish Cultural Institute), Chandenie Gobardhan (supported by DanceEast), Fay van Baar (supported by Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT)), Karla Shacklock (supported by Complicité), Louise Mari and Nigel Barrett (supported by Cambridge Junction), LULA.XYZ (supported by Brixton House), LINTD and Tibyan Mahawah Sanoh (supported by Opera North), Malaika Kegode (supported by Theatre Royal Plymouth), Munotida Chinyanga (supported by Strike A Light), Nathan Ellis (supported by Complicité), Riham Isaac (supported by Complicité) and Tilly Ingram (supported by Activate Performing Arts). Bespoke support the residency offers includes mentors, material resources and access to potential collaborators. Artists who take part also benefit from joining a wider Mudlarks Artist network, and have the opportunity to take part in facilitated sessions that share international and environmental perspectives; two key themes at the heart of Mudlarks, and Complicité’s practice.
This will be the third residency in the programme’s history, taking place at Hawkwood Centre for Future Thinking in Gloucestershire, UK from 10-14 March, 2025. Tim Bell, Senior Creative Producer at Complicité, said: “We’re thrilled to hold this space for such an extraordinary group of artists. Complicité has always been a site for international conversation; across borders, disciplines and ideas. At a time when more and more fences are going up, we hope Mudlarks residencies such as this one can create the opportunity for others to benefit from this exchange too.”
Chandenie Gobardhan, 2025 Mudlarks International Residency Artist, said: “The residency at Hawkwood truly sounds like an incredible space to explore and deepen my creative practice. I’m deeply grateful for the chance to spend focused time on my work, and I’m looking forward to being guided by the team. This feels like the perfect environment to nurture my ideas, and I can’t wait to meet everyone in person.”
Lucy Bayliss, Head of Creative Programmes at nominating partner DanceEast, said: “Mudlarks provides a unique opportunity for artists to explore their practice in a fully supported environment, without the pressure of an outcome – an opportunity which is rare yet hugely valuable. We are pleased to join the partnership and were particularly struck by the care and expertise offered through the programme. We are pleased to be able to support Chandenie Gobardhan to join a really exciting international group which we hope will be an enriching and inspiring experience.”
