Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) is pleased to have been involved with Trevi’s upcoming event at Elizabethan Gardens, The Secret Firefly Garden, which is taking place for one night only on Thursday 28 November.
Trevi is a nationally award-winning women’s and children’s charity based in Southwest England that, since 1993, has provided safe and nurturing spaces for women in recovery to heal, grow and thrive.
The fireflies that will be gracing Elizabethan Gardens at this event, which is part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, were created by the Workshop team at TR2. Each of the fireflies has been meticulously machined and hand-finished to create a breathtaking display. Known internationally as a hub of creative innovation and technical excellence, TR2 has been instrumental in bringing Trevi’s vision to life by producing the fireflies as symbols of courage and hope into the one night only art installation.
The evening seeks to honour all those affected by trauma and violence, with a focus on the resilient symbols at its heart: 200 handmade fireflies crafted with care at TRP’s very own TR2 workshop.
Head of Technical Design, Jason Steen describes the significance of the partnership: “At TR2 we design, build and install theatre scenery from the stages at TRP, to the West End and all over the world. However, as a local charity with our roots firmly in Plymouth, we believe it is vital to support other charities within our city. It has been a privilege to work alongside the great team at Trevi on this project to raise awareness and funding for the important work they do in our community.”
Anna Whittall, a Theatre Scenery Maker at TR2 shared her passion for the project: “To be able to be part of the production of this incredibly powerful visual celebration has been an absolute honour. I have loved being part of the manufacturing of the fireflies installation, recognising the essential and unwavering support Trevi has provided to so many courageous women.”
After the event, Kaya Gallery, a beloved local gallery on the Barbican, will be supporting Trevi’s mission by selling the fireflies – with 100% of sales going to the charity. These keepsake fireflies offer a lasting reminder of the night’s message and allow the public to contribute directly to Trevi’s Sunflower Women’s Centre, which provides vital resources to women in need.
Trevi CEO Hannah Shead shared her excitement: “The Secret Firefly Garden is about bringing the community together, and we are so excited to stand with TR2, Kaya Gallery, and the people of Plymouth for this powerful statement of support for women’s resilience.”
Attendance to The Secret Firefly Garden is free, but spaces are limited. Join Trevi on November 28th and be part of a community that shines a light on hope and unity. Time slots can be booked at www.trevi.org.uk/event/firefly
