Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) has appointed Portcullis Legals as its Legacy Partner, kickstarting a new joint campaign to raise awareness of end-of-life planning and charitable gifting.
The two prominent South West companies announced the partnership on International Day of Charity (05 Sept) and in conjunction with the launch of Your TRP Legacy; a campaign to highlight the impact of leaving a gift to the theatre in your Will.
According to the UK Wills & Probate Consumer Research Report 2025*, 59% of adults in the UK do not have a Will, meaning the law would decide how assets are divided. Leaving a Will ensures individuals decide what happens to their estate, and can offer ways to reduce inheritance tax. One way to lower tax is to leave a Legacy to charitable cause.
TRP is a registered charity, supporting local emerging artists and working with some of the most vulnerable people in the community. Outreach programmes include Acting Up for elderly participants, Our Space for the Armed Forces community and those who have faced challenges such as homelessness and addiction, Young Company for school children and TRP’s Artist Development programme for budding creatives. All the programmes, which are partly funded by local sponsors and partly through its fundraising efforts, aim to ultimately help participants develop core life skills, build confidence and enhance mental health.
A large part of TRP’s fundraising income comes from its annual Festive Appeal and it is hoped that the launch of Your TRP Legacy will create another vital source of funding.
Director of Partnerships & Philanthropy at TRP, Lucy Howe, said: “As a society, we find it difficult to talk about what happens when we’re no longer here, but forward-planning allows individuals to put their personal affairs in order and protect their loved ones and potentially create a lasting Legacy for a cause they care about.
“Charitable gifts can be as little or as much as people can afford and are an amazing way to keep giving long into the future, even if you don’t have disposable income to donate during your lifetime.
“Any Legacies left to TRP will be shared across the many outreach programmes we run, engaging people who wouldn’t normally have access to the theatre.”
Portcullis Legals is a Plymouth and South West specialist in Wills and probate founded in 1988. Trevor Worth, CEO & Founder, said: “Wills and Legacies are all about planning for the future. Our partnership with TRP allows individuals and families to take care of their loved ones whilst acknowledging and showing appreciation for the joy that theatre has given them over their lifetime. Your TRP Legacy enables future generations to engage in the arts and culture, which is so important to us all.”
TRP’s partnership with Portcullis Legals will entitle referred customers to a £100 discount when writing a Will, and an automatic £100 donation will also be made to TRP. Single Wills and couple’s Wills are available and meetings can be held face-to-face or by video call. For any other services utilised with Portcullis Legals, such as Power of Attorney, a further donation of 20% of the fees will be made to TRP. There is no obligation to leave a Legacy.
