TRP Stories: Rosie Sharman-Ward
Rosie Sharman-Ward, 69, is a self-confessed ‘Word Nerd’; riveted by writing and passionate about poetry. Two years ago, Rosie was selected for a unique opportunity to take part in TRP’s Bloggers & Critics scheme which allowed eight individuals behind-the-scenes access at the theatre and learn how to fairly critique a show. Despite being an avid theatre-goer and creative artist, she almost didn’t apply for the programme.
“I was nervous about applying as I thought I was too old and too stuck in my ways. I also didn’t want to have the magic of theatre explained. In fact, the opposite has happened and it has enhanced the experience for me.
“Taking part was life-enhancing. It gave me a lot of confidence in my own ideas and taught me masses about the theatre – both backstage and on stage. I saw shows I wouldn’t normally go to see and discovered I really liked them.”
Speaking about where her love of the theatre originated, Rosie said: “I think my fondness of words and stories is where theatre started for me; enjoying the magic that people can make from words.
“I grew up in London and would get taken to the theatres in Fairfield and Covent Garden. We would also watch local shows in village halls – pantomime was always a huge favourite!
“Now I live in the South West, when I go to Theatre Royal Plymouth, it’s like coming home. It’s an environment I feel comfortable in. Every time I go to the theatre there is something that amazes me about how clever it is.
“It’s such wonderful entertainment. I’m now introducing the grandchildren to the theatre which is like passing on a little bit of magic.”
Revamped for 2025, the Bloggers & Critics scheme returns this spring, with applications now open. To apply, click here.
