TRP Stories: Tasmin Wade
Tasmin’s first experience of the theatre was a trip to watch the pantomime, Cinderella, when she was five or six years old. She then began coming regularly to Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) in 2019.
Originally part of a week-long summer school, she then joined the weekly Young Company Create group for disabled young people who benefit from additional support. The group looks at creative theatre, music and movement. In her early days with Create, Tasmin was a quieter member of the team who struggled to engage in sessions, but has since flourished and become an active role model to others.
Tasmin said: “I heard about the group run by Theatre Royal Plymouth through my school. The first time I came here, I was nervous, but now I feel confident. My favourite thing is playing games and making friends.”
Tasmin took part in TRP’s 40th birthday celebrations in 2022, which culminated in a performance on the Lyric stage. She was also a part of TR2’s 21st anniversary this year which saw her perform in a commemorative show, The Key, in front of 480 people alongside 150 cast members.
Tasmin continued: “For The Key, there were so many people watching me, and it was cool! I had to control myself because my mum was there, and I wanted to give her a hug because she was crying – happy tears!”
TRP Engagement & Learning Associate, Dani Hamlin, said: “Tasmin has grown so much in confidence since the first day we met her and is now an active member of the team. This wasn’t achieved overnight, and has taken years of building relationships and trust and Tasmin should be super proud of herself.
“It’s gorgeous to see the friendships Tasmin now has. She looks out for newer members of the group and welcomes them with open arms which is lovely to see.
“Since that first session, it’s been a pleasure watching Tasmin grow in the way she has.”
TRP’s Festive Appeal raises funds to support young people, like Tasmin, learn new skills and gain friendships through our community projects. To donate, visit theatreroyal.com/donate, or call the Box Office on 01752 267222. There are also donation points situated around the theatre.
Young Company Create is sponsored by The Emerald Group.
