The Star performing (The Star Who Danced)

A warm and wondrous escape: The Star Who Danced shines at Theatre Royal Plymouth

On a stormy Plymouth morning, with rain lashing against umbrellas and the wind whipping down Royal Parade, stepping into The Lab at Theatre Royal Plymouth was the snug shelter of our dreams. The Star Who Danced, created especially for audiences aged 0–3 years, proved to be the perfect winter warmer- a gentle and beautifully crafted performance that left both adults and little ones smiling.

The cast guided the audience through a soft, shimmering world where movement, music, and simple storytelling blended seamlessly. Their dance communicated emotion and curiosity in a way even the youngest audience members could follow. Every gesture felt intentional, calm, and inviting, and the performers’ warm, open expressions helped maintain a sense of trust and comfort throughout the show.

The staging was impressively immersive for such an intimate venue. Soft pools of light, gentle textures, and star-like glimmers turned The Lab into a tiny universe. The props were thoughtfully chosen- lightweight, tactile, and safe for little wandering hands. Floating fabrics, glowing objects, and shining lights created an environment that encouraged exploration without ever overwhelming the senses. The calm pacing let the children engage at their own speed, whether that meant watching quietly from a parent’s lap or toddling closer for a better look.

The costumes were straight out of a bedtime story: celestial-toned fabrics that moved elegantly with the dancers and enhanced the dreamlike quality of the piece. Nothing was overstated; everything felt intentionally soft, soothing, and supportive of the show’s gentle rhythm.

Despite being tailored for babies and toddlers, the performance captivated everyone in the room. Parents, carers and grandparents shared the same expressions of wonder as their little ones. As the show drew to an end, it was clear that The Star Who Danced had offered something rare – a peaceful, immersive, performance that wrapped its audience in warmth while the storm raged outside.

A perfect, star-lit escape from the rain.
