Playhouse is a national partnership project between Theatre Royal Plymouth, York Theatre Royal, Theatr Iolo, Birmingham Rep, Sheffield Theatres, CAST and Landmark Theatres.
Delivered nationally across the UK, Playhouse is a unique participatory nations theatre project that connects schools with professional theatres, script writers and theatre makers, so they may be inspired and empowered to experience the benefits of professional theatre making.
This year, six primary schools from Devon and Cornwall will take over The Drum for a week of performances, reimagining the traditional school play and what can be achieved. These performances promise to delight and inspire audiences, as students bring vibrant characters to life, tackle important issues facing the world today, and embark on heartfelt conversations.

This year’s plays
Why?
Why? is an ensemble play driven by questions, curiosity, and the restless energy of a wet lunchtime. Set in a classroom where the children are not allowed outside to play, the piece begins in boredom, where time stretches, rules hover, and imagination starts to fizz.
Optimized
A play about the worst kid in school accidentally becoming the best, then deciding that being the best is actually the worst thing that could happen to anyone.
Little Criminals
Little Criminals is a courtroom drama told in rhyme – featuring children’s favourite fairy tale characters in the dock. As the trial unfolds, key questions emerge – how much were these children responsible for their actions and how much were they the victims of circumstance?
