Tom Denbigh EXPERIMENT Work In Progress

“He decides… not to lie. No lies. But… it’s not fair is it? That without that one little slip-up, one tiny mistake, he wouldn’t be getting any of this…”

In a moment of mistaken pronouns, a stagnating writer comes out as a gay while onstage at a local poetry night. Everyone is ecstatic, supportive, complimentary and so very, very welcoming. The only problem: he’s not actually gay.

This is a story which explores lying, sexuality and the politics of privilege. What would you do to get ahead and get noticed? Is it really lying if we’re all ‘a little bit gay’? And when you sell your sexuality – who pays the price?

Written by award-winning poet Tom Denbigh (Winner of BBC Words First), and directed by Stephanie Kempson (Fringe First award winning director of Breathless), this is a black comedy work-in progress about privilege for 2026

This work in progress is supported by Theatre Royal Plymouth’s EXPERIMENT strand of Artist Development. EXPERIMENT supports artists and companies with funding, research and development time, space in The Lab and the facility to present a public sharing of their work.
