Klezmer by the Sea – a landmark evening of traditional Jewish music in our intimate performance space, The Drum, configured cabaret-style for an authentic klezmer experience.
Rooted in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe and shaped by centuries of musical exchange with Roma, Romanian, Ukrainian and Balkan traditions, klezmer is a music that has always belonged to more than one story. Experience its infectious energy, soulful melodies, and music that has always made people want to move – one of the great cross-cultural musical traditions of Europe – in one of the South West’s most prestigious cultural venues
This special Jewish Heritage Month event brings professional klezmer musicians to Plymouth, one of England’s oldest provincial Jewish communities (dating back to the 1740s), which has historically had very little Jewish cultural programming. Presented in partnership with Plymouth Jewish Community CIC, who are bringing Jewish cultural life back to the city, this is a rare opportunity to encounter a living musical tradition shaped by centuries of encounter and exchange.
The evening performance is complemented by educational outreach in Plymouth schools the following morning, where young people will learn about the history and cultural significance of klezmer music, its roots in Jewish communities, and its continuing evolution today. If you are interested in finding out more about the educational outreach programme, please contact our education team at info@theatreroyal.com.
Whether you’re familiar with klezmer or discovering it for the first time, this promises to be an unforgettable evening of music, culture, and community – bringing Jewish joy to the South West and celebrating our rich cultural heritage in a city where it truly matters.
Join us for what will be Plymouth’s most significant Jewish cultural event in recent memory.

The Klezmer Village Band
Strains of the shtetl echo through this trad trio’s old and new melodies. They bring a 21st-century zest to klezmer, the distinctive music rooted in the Jewish communities of Eastern Europe and shaped by centuries of musical exchange with Roma, Romanian, Ukrainian and Balkan traditions, klezmer is a music that has always belonged to more than one story. The genre is both soulful and lively, and has travelled through time and across continents – barely surviving, reviving and now thriving – to earn a place in the hearts of today’s music-lovers.
The group’s musicians have brought klezmer music to audiences around the world: a collaboration between Ilana Cravitz (violin), John Macnaughton (clarinet) and Theo Malka-Wishart (double bass), members of the group have formed and performed with some of the best-known ensembles on the klezmer scene, including the London Klezmer Quartet, Klezmer Foygl, She’Koyokh and Oysland.
Together they create an irresistible experience for audiences of all ages, weaving haunting and toe-tapping melodies together with evocative stories of musicians’ lives & times.
As klezmer educators the team have clocked up hundreds of hours, through interactive performances for children in schools; faculty positions at the world’s foremost Jewish music festivals; teaching engagements in universities and conservatoires; and individual and group coaching for instrumentalists of all ages.
