Legacy Giving

What could your legacy be?

As a registered charity, Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) relies on public support to keep the arts thriving in the South West.

Each year, through our vast array of community projects, we engage with between 25,000 – 30,000 people of all ages and background across Plymouth and the surrounding area. Currently, we are working with children in the areas of highest social deprivation; veterans and adults with multiple disadvantages including homelessness, addiction and risk of reoffending, mental health issues and social isolation.

Leaving a Legacy to TRP in your Will, will enable us to continue our outreach programmes and support the most vulnerable people to build confidence and create lasting friendships, as well as keep our building maintained.

It’s more than just money – it’s giving the gift of creativity to the people of the South West.

Over 59% of the UK population don’t have a Will, and this is the biggest barrier to Legacy gifts for charities. That’s why we’ve engaged Portcullis Legals, the award-winning estate planning service in the South West, to be our Legacy Partner.

As prominent South West companies and leaders in our respective fields, TRP and Portcullis Legals are proud to launch this joint initiative.

If you decide to write your Will with Portcullis Legals, not only will you receive a £100 discount on their Will-writing services, an automatic £100 donation will be made to TRP. For any other services utilised with Portcullis Legals, such as Power of Attorney, a further donation of 20% of the fees will be made to TRP.

Support Stories

Theatre Royal Plymouth Trustee, Julie Nash said:

Altering our Wills had been on our ‘to do’ list for months. Being given the opportunity to work with Portcullis Legals to complete them, and knowing that it is also beneficial to TRP, is very exciting. Working with Trevor and his team at Portcullis was easy; great communication and explanations along the way and swift progress to deliver all we’d asked for. Thank you to TRP and Portcullis for shortening our ‘to do’ list! We are very happy!

You can even leave a lasting Legacy during your lifetime.

Joan Lucas is a long-standing Member of TRP and an avid theatre fan. For six years, Joan donated a small amount every month to TRP which funded theatre trips for local school children, often from areas of multiple deprivation with perceived barriers to accessing the arts. Over that time, her donations accumulated to over £12,000 which has enabled more than 1,150 children to attend performances and experience the magic of the theatre.

FAQs

What is a Legacy?

Legacies are an amazing way to make an impact to a cause you care about even if you don’t have disposable income to support charities in a big way during your lifetime. At TRP, 100% of the Legacies we are bequeathed will be used towards bringing the theatre to the people of Plymouth and the surrounding areas. However big or small, you can make a real difference.

Another incentive for considering a charitable Legacy gift is its Inheritance Tax exemption which means it has the potential to reduce the tax burden on your family.

You can leave a Legacy to a particular area of our work, for example our work with young people or people with disabilities, but the most valuable gifts are not restricted. This is because we don’t know what the future holds; which programmes will need more support or what new projects we may launch. Leaving your money unrestricted will allow us to put your money to best use, where it is needed most.

Why should I leave a Legacy?

Leaving a gift to charity in your Will is a long-lasting way to pledge your support to a cause you’re passionate about. It’s a promise you make to leave a monetary donation after your death.

Do I have to tell you I’ve left a gift in my Will to TRP?

You don’t have to tell us, but we would love to hear from you to thank you for your support.

How can I leave a Legacy?

To leave a Legacy, you should speak to a trusted legal advisor.

We have partnered with Portcullis Legals to provide an exclusive offer to our valued patrons.

What would a Legacy gift to TRP support?

Every year, through our vast array of community projects including Our Space, Young Company and Acting Up, we engage with between 25,000 – 30,000 local people of all ages and background. Currently, we are working with children in the areas of highest social deprivation; veterans; adults with multiple disadvantages including homelessness, addiction and risk of reoffending, mental health issues and social isolation; and many more. Legacy gifts will support these programmes, as well as keep our building maintained.

What does the partnership with Portcullis entail?

Portcullis fees are currently £345 + VAT for a single Will and £395 + VAT for a couple’s Will. Clients referred through this partnership will receive a £100 discount off these fees, plus Portcullis will donate £100 to TRP. Portcullis will provide a further Partnership Referral donation to TRP in every situation where the client takes further advice and asks to put in place Power of Attorney, Trusts Planning, Inheritance Tax Planning or Probate. This figure is 20% of the total fee minus disbursements and VAT when the fee is paid in full by the client.

Every client receives an initial Discovery Meeting with one of the Portcullis team. This is personal and bespoke as it highlights other legal matters you may need to consider and ensures Portcullis provides a diligent and professional advice service.
