National Theatre and The Unicorn's The Last Wild - Schools Performances
An enthralling world premiere of Piers Torday’s much-loved story.
In a future where animals no longer exist, 12-year-old Kester lives in a silent, quarantined world… until one night a flock of excited pigeons and a bossy cockroach start talking to him!
Flown to a place where the last creatures in the land have survived, Kester is thrown into an extraordinary adventure where he must decide how far he will go to save the last of the wild. Packed with action, heart and humour, The Last Wild is an epic adventure about courage, friendship and fighting for a world worth saving.
Adapted by Jude Christian from the best-selling book by Piers Torday, winner of the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize, and directed by Unicorn’s Artistic Director Rachel Bagshaw, The Last Wild is the Unicorn’s first co-production with the National Theatre – touring nationwide in 2027.
This production includes specific performances for schools to attend for free from Wed 20 — Fri 22 Mar. A large number of subsidised and free tickets are available across all venues to help break down barriers to entry and build new audiences for theatre. The nationwide primary touring performances are free for all schools thanks to Hearn funding.

What is on offer for schools that book to see the production?
The Last Wild Education Programme is designed to support teachers in exploring the play with their students in the classroom, spreading the magic of the production beyond theatre walls.
The programme will officially launch with a CPD for teachers held online on Wed 11th Nov from 4.30 – 6pm, hosted by author Piers Torday.
Alongside this, teachers will receive:
- Pre-show creative tasks for schools to complete with students
- A practical, educational Scheme of Learning for teachers to deliver in schools with cross-curricular links
- A post-show ‘Words from the Wild’ writing workshop plan for teachers to deliver in schools.
- A video writing tutorial hosted by Jude Christian for independent learning.
