The Our Space Production Company presents Odyssey-inspired
The Body Measures Time
Theatre Royal Plymouth’s (TRP) Our Space Productions returns with a powerful new show, The Body Measures Time, debuting in The Drum this September.
Known for its bold visual storytelling and immersive soundscapes, Our Space once again brings together participants to co-create and star in an evocative new work. This latest production reimagines Homer’s The Odyssey through three interconnected perspectives exploring separation, survival, identity and the difficult journey home. The Body Measures Time is a unique collaboration spanning multiple Our Space strands; while an initial prologue will be created and performed by participants from HMP Channings Wood (THURS 30 JUL), the ticketed show in The Drum will unfold in two distinct acts: the first performed by the Our Space production group and the second by its Armed Forces strand. Developed through weekly devising sessions, the piece platforms the lived experiences and creative voices of the group. During the interval of each show, there will be special performances led by the TRP Armed Forces Choir and the Our Space Morning and Progression Group.
Our Space is TRP’s outreach programme, working with adults who may have experienced homelessness, mental health challenges, addiction, reoffending, or social isolation. Through regular creative activity, the programme supports recovery, builds confidence and provides pathways into skills development and artistic collaboration. Established 16 years ago, Our Space has supported hundreds of individuals across the city.
As part of the programme, members are given the opportunity to take part in creative projects, devising and presenting original work. The Body Measures Time is the latest example of this ethos in action, where the community take centre stage.
Director, Lee Hart, said: “The Body Measures Time is our exploration of the themes at the heart of The Odyssey. We’ve sought out its characters in our own experience, traced its emotional landscapes in our own lives, and perhaps most importantly, found our own voice to express this unique perspective on hope, longing, and resilience.”
Our Space Programme Manager, Becky Ormrod, said: “The Body Measures Time places community at the heart of storytelling, platforming the experiences of the company in a powerful and deeply human response to an ancient epic. We are incredibly proud to bring this production to the stage. The commitment, creativity and confidence shown by everyone involved has been inspiring, and we’re so excited for audiences to experience the work they’ve created together.”
The Body Measures Time plays in The Drum at Theatre Royal Plymouth 24 – 26 September. Tickets are £8 and are on sale now. The HMP Channings Wood Prison production will be a closed performance.
