A Monster Calls tells the story of a teenage boy, Conor, as he struggles to cope with the consequences of his mother’s illness. Conor has been having the same dream every night, ever since his mother first fell ill. At 12:07am – seven minutes after midnight – he wakes to find there’s a monster at his window. It is elemental, a force of nature. It wants to tell Conor three stories, and then wants Conor to tell a fourth himself, and it wants Conor to tell the truth.

A Monster Calls is a powerful, moving and imaginative stage version of the acclaimed novel of love, loss and hope by Patrick Ness, and inspired by an original idea by Siobhan Dowd. Dowd was terminally ill with cancer when she came up with the idea, but died before she could write the story. It was originally devised for the stage by Sally Cookson, Adam Peck and the Company for Bristol Old Vic.

“Stories are wild creatures…when you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak!”
